Upper Kachura Lake

Upper Kachura Lake

Three lakes called the Kachura Lakes are located in northern Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan's Skardu District. Upper Kachura Lake and Lower Kachura Lake are the lakes, with an elevation of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). The latter is located outside of Skardu town and is also referred to as Shangrila Lake. It is part of the Shangrila Resort vacation area. Adjacent to Shangri-la, in the little settlement of Zambakha, lies another lake known as Zambakha Lake. The lakes are located in the Indus River basin, the larger Kashmir region, and the western Himalayan mountain range known as the Karakoram.

The crystal-clear Upper Kachura Lake is seventy meters (230 feet) deep. Summertime temperatures there are 15 °C (59 °F). The surface is frozen over during the winter. Less high, the higher Indus River flows close by.

Because of its rugged terrain and lack of infrastructure, the Upper Kachura Lake's natural beauty remains largely unspoiled and untouched by tourists. Rich in the subalpine conifer forests ecoregion of the Western Himalayas, the area is also well-known for its wild apricot orchards, Prunus armeniaca. Upper Kachura Lake offers trekking, trout fishing, and Himalayan mountaineering as recreational opportunities.
