Nanga Parbat
One of the world's highest mountains, featuring snowy peaks & a history of treacherous climbs.
Nanga Parbat, also known as Diamir, one of the world's highest mountains, at 26,660 feet (8,126 meters), is located in the western Himalayas, 17 miles (27 km) west-southwest of Astor, in a Pakistani-administered area of Kashmir. The sloping southern wall of the mountain is nearly 15,000 feet (4,600 meters) above the valley just below and the northern slope drops about 23,000 feet (7,000 meters) down the Indus River. British Alpine climberAlbert F. Mummery led the attempt to climb the glacier-covered mountain and snow in 1895, but he died in the attempt. At least 30 more climbers (mainly led by Germans) were also killed in Nanga Parbat because of extreme weather conditions and frequent avalanches in front of the Austrian climber. Hermann Buhl reached its peak in 1953. The Kashmiri name Nanga Parbat is derived from the Sanskrit words nagna parvata, which means 'naked mountain'. Diamir is the local name for the peak and means 'king of the mountains'.
